Jobs

Now in the country of East Glob,

When kids are in first grade,

A super duper, very big decision must be made.

Each of the children must decide,

With no help, on their own,

The job that they would like to do when they are fully grown.

And from that very day they choose,

All they learn, as a rule,

Is how to do the job they picked when they were first in school.

The adults say, “Why should they waste,

“Time learning other stuff?

“If kids just learn to do their job, it should be quite enough.”

Now since they choose jobs in first grade,

It should be no surprise,

That tons of folks in Old East Glob fly airplanes in the skies.

And there are many firemen,

And many astronauts,

And famous ballerinas? Why there sure are lots and lots.

But nobody makes fire hats,

Or even ballet shoes,

‘Cause those are not the kind of jobs that kids in first grade choose.

So East Glob has its football stars,

But has no English teachers.

And in the football stadium, no one can fix the bleachers.

And all the famous actors,

Have bad breath. It’s the truth.

Because in the whole land no one knows how to clean a tooth.

And every race car driver,

Has races that get spoiled,

For no one can fix engines or make sure that they get oiled.

All fifteen East Glob presidents,

And sixty kings and queens,

Often eat no dinner, since no one grows rice or beans.

They never can find medicine,

To clear a royal nose,

In fact, they’re often naked, because no one can sew clothes.

So if you hate your schoolwork,

Or just can’t stand your job,

Please thank your lucky stars that we’re not living in East Glob.

While things here aren’t perfect,

We’d sure be in a fix,

If all that we could do was what we liked when we were six.
